It depends on what your calorie intake is.
Losing weight is about eating enough calories so that your body doesn't believe your staving but still eating less calories then your body burns in a day. It's better to create a minus in calories by exercising so 30 minutes on a treadmill is really not much. I normally burn around 800 cal from my workouts.
But if you simply cannot stick to a tough workout program, then do your treadmill and figure that it's better than nothing.

I understand your qualms and there is always a way of shaping your own path to success. Soy is ok but hasn't lived up to the hype that has pushed it into the forefront of peoples mindset that last 10-12 years. Soy is a plant based protein that must be combined with other food sources to create a complete amino acid profile. A simple way to avoid the Powdered shake whether it comes from standard protein shake mixes or Soy blends is to incorporate a good mix of food based proteins. Egg Whites are one of the best sources of protein because almost 100% of it gets metabolized into the system for delivery to system for muscle building and recovery. Not all proteins are the same. Proteins are rated based on how high of a percentage gets metabolized into the system and Egg white are at the top of the list. It seems to me I remember reading that “extreme” exercise (extreme for me, that is) and muscle-building itself will tend to suppress female hormones to the point where menstruation can even stop. Is that just in teenagers, or adults, too? Female hormones are produced in fatty tissues all over the body, not just in ovaries. A woman who makes herself into a lean mean fighting machine, with not an ounce of fatty tissue, is not going to produce much in the way of female hormones, I would guess.
