Crunches aren't really a very effective method of strengthening the abs or the core. Try planks and work the sides do them on your one arm with your body turned 90 degrees), hollow rocks and supermans (hollow rock: superman is on your stomach).
Crunches don't actually work your core, they work your hip flexors (the thing that contracts when you raise your knee to your chest). It “burns,” but it's not actually working the abs. These exercises are far more effective.
Also note, there is no such thing as “spot fat reduction” (or doing crunches to lose fat on the stomach). In order to get “visible abs” you need to lower your body fat percentage. Where the fat comes off first depends on the body… Some people gain/lose fat in their arms first, or their legs, or their butt or their face or their stomach… etc.
What is your diet like? Diet is an extremely important part of weight loss – almost more important than the workout!
