I train at an Arbutus Jiu Jitsu school in Maryland . I compete in international tournaments very often and I am constantly cutting
weight. International tournaments do mat side weigh-ins so you don’t really want to do a large water weight cut because after a couple of matches you will be wiped out. Whenever I cut down I always say I’m going to keep the weight off so I don’t have to keep cutting. However, after a few months the weight always comes back. I decided to talk to a conditioning coach at a Catonsville Kickboxing school. The recommendations that I was given surprised me a little. He said, as most people know, to cut down you simply need to burn more calories then you are consuming. “The problem is that as you get thinner you need less calories so it gets harder to cut and/or maintain”. In other words if you need less food to maintain you need to be extremely disciplined to stay on the diet. So he said the first thing to do is cut down. Then what I need to do is build muscle. Muscle cells burn calories twice as fast as fat cells. By gaining muscle after reducing your body fat you will greatly increase your metabolism, which will allow you to consume more food without gaining weight. I didn’t know if it would work or not but figured he knew more then me so I tried t out. I got a really good work out routine from my friend that trains at an Odenton Muay Thai school to help me build up. I have been on the new routine for a few months and everything seems to be going really good.
