We live in a world where we are expected to produce high quality work in absurdly fast turn-around times. This is due to the convenience and speed that computers, PDAs, cell phones, and other gadgets have brought to our lives. Much of these expectations are unrealistic, but they have infiltrated our psyche. This thought process has worked its way into other areas of our lives as well. We now have come to expect immediate results on things like investments, home improvement projects, and our diets, whether it is realistic or not.
That is why so many highly intelligent people have been attracted to the world of fad diets. These food plans promise quick results but are often pushing unhealthy, unbalanced nutrition. They are promoted on television shows and magazines. By their popularity, we can mistakenly believe that they are a good, healthy choice. We forget that they are promoted to bring the author wealth, not health.
Why Do We Have To Eat?
If we only ate because we were hungry, food would be for comfort only. Instead, it is a necessity that keeps us alive. Like a car needs fuel to make its engine work, our bodies need food to keep them operating. Food provides nourishment for our bones, blood, brains and organs. If we eat unhealthy or unbalanced diets, our bodies cannot function properly.
We gain weight for two reasons. Number one, we consume more food than we need. Number two is that we don”t get enough exercise to burn off the calories that we consume. There are many reasons that we eat. Stress, boredom, and fear are just three. But if you look carefully, you will see that these are all emotional responses and have nothing to do with hunger or nourishment.
So when we eat from emotion, we push too much food into our bodies. Our bodies respond by getting larger. This is not a healthy way to eat and is discouraged by society. But, in the same way it is not healthy to over eat, it is also not healthy to deny your body the nutritional elements that it requires such as carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, will not alone make you gain weight. In fact, our brains need them to think. But is it the volume and the type of carbohydrate, or any element for that matter, that we consume that packs on the weight.
Too Much of a Good Thing
Quick fixes and miraculous weight loss are what sell books, and fad diet authors know that well. Healthy eating is really a matter of eating in moderation. A little bit of everything won’t harm you, so instead of sitting in front of the TV finishing a whole bag of chips, pour a handful into a bowl and eat that. The answer to weight gain is not a fad diet, starving your body of the balance of nutrients it needs, or the treats you would like. A healthy balanced diet is the best way to lose weight.
