can this be done with dumbells because i don’t have kettlebells

  5. HardTimesHardBodies says:

@coltmz13 Sure you could do this with dumbbells – but you’ll eventually want to invest in some good kettlebells.

Everyone has at least some belly fat. And you're right, most people that are deconditioned and have an abundance of belly fat probably will not be able to perform that exercise. They can do the “plank” instead.

Hey TK, thanks for that. I'm a bear of very little brain, as they say, and that was much easier for me to get through.

Points #1 & #4: His earlier opponents were in fact agressive fighters, but Lyoto fights in a way that's foreign to them. Had Shogun been Lyoto's first UFC opponent, I doubt he'd have been as effective as he was when they did fight, because he had the experience of watching how other fighters attempted to handle Lyoto's distance and timing. You say to pick out one aspect and calling it the key is wrong, which in general I agree with, but in this case, I think it was an indication of bigger differences.

MMA has become (or is becoming) a single entity unto itself. In most gyms around here (well, in the nearest big city, ~150 miles away) they no longer teach MMA as a combination of Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling and BJJ. It's MMA, and it's all taught together. You can see this when you watch the UFC – most fighters tend to look pretty similar. Sure, some have better striking, some have better takedowns, etc, but they all pretty much have the same sort of timing/distance etc. The same flavor, or “gestalt”, if you will.

Lyoto has trained all of the same stuff they do. He's familiar with how MMA fighters fight. But he also has that great karate background. This allows him to bring a different feel to the cage. The way he keeps distance is different than the way a boxer or muay thai fighter does, so other fighters have trouble measuring how they're going to close the distance or stay out of range. The timing of how he moves and strikes is different, the way he sets up strikes is different. Now, though, he's been at it for a while. The other fighters have seen him fight, which allows them to change their strategies to deal with the unique challenges a fighter like Lyoto brings.

Which brings me to points #3/#7/#8: I agree very much that Lyoto seems to be overreacting to the loss to Shogun by going deep into the standard MMA training paradigm as I mentioned above. I think he would be better served by building his strengths that have so far frustrated other “traditional” MMA fighters, namely his karate. He proved that karate can be an effective part of a high level MMA game, he shouldn't turn his back on it now.
